Understanding Varicose Veins
Varicose veins are enlarged, twisted veins that appear most commonly in the legs and feet. They occur when the valves in the veins that prevent blood from flowing backward become weak or damaged, causing blood to pool in the veins. In Ayurveda, varicose veins are associated with aggravated Vata dosha (which governs circulation) and weakened Rasa and Rakta dhatus (plasma and blood tissues).
Common Symptoms:
- Visible, bulging, twisted veins — often blue or dark purple
- Aching, heavy feeling in the legs, especially after standing
- Swelling in the lower legs and ankles
- Burning, throbbing, or cramping in the legs
- Itching around the affected veins
- Skin discolouration near the ankles in advanced cases
The root cause involves weakened vein walls and valves, often due to prolonged standing, sedentary lifestyle, obesity, pregnancy, and genetic predisposition. From a yogic perspective, varicose veins reflect stagnation of blood and prana in the lower body — the natural upward return flow is compromised.
What Research Says
A study published in the Indian Journal of Physiology and Pharmacology (2016) found that a 6-month yoga program specifically designed for venous insufficiency resulted in significant improvement in venous return velocity by 28% and reduction in leg circumference (indicating reduced pooling). Participants reported decreased pain, heaviness, and swelling. The study highlighted that inverted poses and leg elevation practices were the most beneficial.
Guruji Dr. Asana Andiappan's Therapeutic Approach
"Varicose veins are the body telling you that blood is not flowing back to the heart efficiently. In our therapeutic system, we use gravity as our ally. Inverted poses and leg elevation practices reverse the pooling of blood and give the weakened valves a rest. We also strengthen the calf muscles — the 'second heart' that pumps blood upward — through specific standing and walking practices. Combined with the external application of castor oil and the internal use of horse chestnut or Triphala, we have seen significant improvement in even severe varicose veins."
Recommended Therapeutic Yoga Practices
- Viparita Karani (Legs Up the Wall): The most important practice — elevating the legs above the heart allows gravity to drain pooled blood and reduces pressure on the vein valves. Hold for 10-15 minutes daily.
- Sarvangasana (Shoulder Stand — supported): A full inversion that reverses blood flow in the legs, strengthens vein walls, and improves venous return.
- Pawanmuktasana Series (Ankle and Toe Movements): Pumping movements of the feet and ankles activate the calf muscle pump, improving venous return.
- Tadasana with Calf Raises: Strengthens the gastrocnemius and soleus muscles — the primary muscles responsible for pumping blood from the legs back to the heart.
- Cycling Movement (Pada Sanchalanasana): Lying on the back and cycling the legs in the air improves circulation and strengthens the leg muscles without standing pressure.
Important: Avoid prolonged standing poses and deep squats that increase pressure in the leg veins. Always practise under qualified guidance.
Kitchen Herb & Natural Remedy
Triphala combined with Horse Chestnut (Aesculus hippocastanum) is highly effective for varicose veins. Triphala strengthens blood vessel walls and improves circulation, while horse chestnut contains aescin, a compound that reduces vein permeability and inflammation. A Cochrane review found that horse chestnut seed extract reduced leg pain, swelling, and itching in varicose vein patients by up to 40% compared to placebo.
How to use: Take one teaspoon of Triphala powder in warm water before bed. For external application, mix Triphala powder with warm castor oil and gently massage the legs in an upward direction (toward the heart) every evening. Never massage directly on bulging veins — massage the surrounding tissue.
Dietary Guidance — The Sattvic Way
A circulation-boosting Sattvic diet supports vein health:
- Include: Fibre-rich foods (whole grains, vegetables, fruits) to prevent constipation (straining worsens varicose veins), flavonoid-rich foods (berries, citrus, dark grapes) that strengthen vein walls, and anti-inflammatory spices (turmeric, ginger).
- Avoid: Excessive salt (causes water retention and swelling), refined carbohydrates, alcohol (dilates veins), and constipation-causing foods.
- Hydration: Drink plenty of water throughout the day to maintain blood fluidity and prevent clotting.
Wisdom from the Ancient Texts
Thiruvalluvar speaks of the importance of understanding the body's needs:
"Utravan theerppaan marundhu uzhaicchelvaanendru appaal naalvakai theerppaan marundhu"
(Kural 949) — "The wise healer considers the patient, the disease, the time, and the remedy."
For varicose veins, the remedy is clear — reverse gravity's effect through inversions, strengthen the muscles that pump blood upward, and nourish the vein walls through proper diet and herbs.
Thirumoolar, in the Thirumandiram (Verse 726):
"Vaasi yogam vallavar vaanavar aaguvaar"
— "Those who master the breath and energy flow become like celestials."
The Siddha tradition teaches that when prana flows freely through all the nadis (energy channels), the physical circulatory system also functions optimally. Varicose veins are a physical manifestation of blocked energy flow in the legs — yoga therapy restores this flow.
