Screen Shot 2018-08-21 at 3.51.00 PMYoga for me was at first a form of exercise that I wanted to practice to be fit. My journey with asanas began 18 years ago when I attended a few asana sessions conducted by Mrs. Anuradha Sontakke. She is a disciple of Dr.B.K.S. Iyengar and her classes were my first exposure to asanas.

I found that I was flexible and able to perform many asanas comfortably. There was a sense of accomplishment and mental calm at the end of the class. This prompted me to practice with a group of like-minded individuals. The sessions were once a week and  I was happy with my efforts.

Gradually I was roped into teaching asanas for children and some adults. When my role changed from that of a participant to a guru, my approach to yoga underwent a sea change as I was forced to read up on the subject, watch videos, practice on my own before teaching the asanas.

This led me to the world of Ashtanga yoga - Yama, Niyama, Asana, Pranayama, Pratyahara, Dharana, Dhyana, and Samadhi. My perception of yoga underwent a transformation. Here was a whole new world that opened up. I realized that these eight limbs of yoga were mere tools to achieve self- realization and union with the Supreme or God.

Over the years I was encouraged by friends and family to obtain a formal certification to teach yoga. This led to my enrollment in Asana Andiappan College of Yoga. I signed up for a 2200-hourintensive teacher’s training session. Here began another significant chapter in my yoga journey. These sessions were a mix of practicals and theory conducted by efficient and experienced tecahers. The class participants were people from all walks of life, across age groups ,l evels of flexibility and ability to perform asanas. The enthusiasm and sense of the camaraderie that was present in the group made my learning experience an immensely enjoyable and rewarding one.

The practical classes werean eye-opener. Training provided by the teachers on various asanas and the preparatory stretches gave me an insight on how to assist new learners. I was also amazed by how much I could do now after their expert advice.

The theory classes on anatomy and other body systems and functions were a welcome refresher to my Science lessons from school.

The lessons on Ashtanga yoga and yoga sutras were a reminder that the various limbs of yoga are a way of life and not just a form of exercise. Good habits, social responsibility, self- discipline, introspection, asanas, withdrawal of senses, yogic diet, concentration, meditation and surrender to God are aspects that we practice unknowingly everyday. With discipline and focus our journey through life can be made easier. It has to be a daily effort and lifestyle change.

Lessons on Naturopathy and partaking of a leaf bath, mud bath nad kriyas have dadedto my awareness on good health and ancient therapeutic practices.

Working with a group of people with similar attitudes and zest for life has been a bonus. A group session always provides the energy and encouragement that no self practice can.

In this age of technology where there is so much information available at our fingertips, the knowledge gained under the tutelage of an experienced guru can never be equalled. What i have gained from these classes have been immense. I am grateful to Mr. Raja, Mr. Rajadurai, Ms.Gowri, Ms.Ezhili, Mr. Annadurai, Ms. Suhasini for their patience and dedication in teaching us.

My journey through the world of yoga continues. It has been 18 years since I first began my practice. I am not the same person physically. What happens after my classes are over? Will I practise everyday and incorporate what I have learnt so far?  Keeping in mind that I may not have a similar  ambience wherever I go, will certainly try...
