Yoga Therapy for Chronic Fatigue Syndrome

Chronic fatigue syndrome (“CFS”) is a complicated disorder characterised by extreme fatigue. The fatigue is not due to exertion, not significantly relieved by rest, and is not caused by other medical conditions.

CFS may also be referred to as myalgic encephalomyelitis, post-viral fatigue syndrome, or chronic fatigue immune dysfunction syndrome.

Yoga Therapy

The symptoms of CFS are often linked to mood and can vary from day to day. Pacing may be a useful way of controlling CFS symptoms.  It involves balancing periods of activity with periods of rest.

Pacing means neither overdoing it nor pushing oneself beyond the limits. Through the practice of yoga, one learns how to make the most of energy. Further, various yoga poses help relieve stress; adjust hormonal balance; induce relaxation; and enhance sleeping pattern. While evidence is currently lacking for nutritional defects in CFS patients, a balanced diet can be favorable to better health in general and would be expected to benefit a person with any chronic illness.
